Diet Myth-information from Dr. Oz

Dr. Oz has yet another new miracle pill to make you lose weight. I equate Dr. Oz with Fox News. They are shills for whoever is paying them money to dispense MYTH-information! A wellness coach was asking about the latest and greatest Dr. Oz promotion.  I responded to her question:

1. If not from overeating, what do you think the reasons for weight gain are (other than eating the wrong foods)?

I think that stress is the foundational problem with weight. Yes, genetics plays a big part, and may be unavoidable for many. However, if the vast majority of people followed their body’s signals of hunger, thirst, and feeling tired: listened, and followed their body’s plan, they would not over-eat. But people eat for many different reasons, and they over-eat for many reasons NOT related to hunger: boredom, anger, self-nurturing…

Also, under stress, the physiology changes, and metabolism is seriously impacted.  The body’s priority is to preserve life: Fight or Flight from a stressor that could injure it. If you were running from a predator, your body wouldn’t be wasting energy to metabolize, digest and eliminate at this critical time. That’s why under stress, deliberate weight loss is next to impossible.

Without addressing the issue of stress relief, weight loss is VERY difficult. Furthermore, traditional “dieting” of eating less and exercising more is actually impossible by the laws of nature. Nature will re-adjust any weight loss after this kind of regime, and bring the body back to a set point. That’s why 95{5b8e831512cf0c284f7edae7fc403e9a09e5b1736c5b1d60e4451a29dc064ebe} of people regain the weight- NOT because they are lazy, or undisciplined. And with the low self-esteem of an overweight person, they are all too willing to accept personal blame, which adds to the stress, and makes it a vicious cycle.
